NEW FRONTIER ON TERRORISM

The series of daring attacks on government troops in the troubled north western Pakistan recently helping transform this area from theatre of isolated skirmishes and threatens to usher in fully fledged guerilla warfare. Musharraf has in the past affirmed his tight grip, having completely disorganized the Islamists in the troubled region. With Baitullah mehsud’s last month’s declaration, forging an alliance with the Taliban, it makes Pervez Mussharaf’s hand full in the eyes of a volatile election season.

Whether he springs into action immediately or not, many consider an explosive offensive is too late. Mehsud is also blamed for masterminding Bhutto’s death notwithstanding a lot other militant attacks that have echoed the Militant show of force to retake this frontier. Facing armed fire from the rebels, government outposts fell loose ultimately being overrun by Islamic militants.

Is the much hyped strength of Pakistan military about to crack to the pressure of advancing militants? The ever increasing militancy coupled with collateral damage dealt on military targets not mentioning the insurgent infiltration of the army is troubling not only Pakistan’s leaders but western leader alike. The president however is down playing his shaky grip on the military and always counting on counteroffensive whenever the militants strike.
America has already tabled a plan to help quell and tighten the vice on the militants and would only hope that it’s allowed to deploy in the region a step opposed by the Pakistani leader.

The volatility arising from the Islamist build up is troubling Hamid karzai who repeatedly complains about his southern neighbor’s failure to contain the Taliban who traverse this porous mountainous border unabated causing him so much headache at home? Karzai believes all courses of action should be exhausted including deploying American soldiers if it were the only option.
What does America’s presence on the ground in Pakistani mean? It’s only too real for the Mehsud’s to turn this area into battleground; it also presents to them a clean opportunity to slaughter more American ‘infidels”, what they are willing to die for come the day they are deployed.

The bush administration has had a fair share of blame on how they handled the Iraqi invasion to dislodge Saddam which still haunts them, and are not ready to trade any more lives so easily. They are treading cautiously and opting to seek Britain’s deployment if Musharraf allows and preferring America’s help in training and marshalling in hardware than go into running battle with militants.

The united states ‘s double standard stand on Israel and Palestine have helped drive a deep wedge of hatred and distrust among Muslim communities and any American presence here will spell a blood baths around this already volatile region.
Musharraf may not be a darling of the democratic world west but its Pakistani’s only best saviour for the moment as no one can handle the military. The country can not afford to test new waters putting many lives at immense risk any destabilization might bring.

We may end up with Taliban; Al-Qaeda enterprise name, it owning a nuclear arsenal, grazing the Pakistan- afghan border or even a Hezbollah style government running Pakistan in any anticipated power struggle that might ensue from the turmoil
No body expects a nuclear proliferation with all the Al-Qaeda splinter groups having a piece of the precision technology, we would come face to face with nuclear Armageddon sooner than later.
