I have watched one US television network paint a rosy picture about bush’s latest visit to Africa, and that many folks here are assumed to be no match for the rest of the world on assessing the collateral damage the most powerful man on earth has done to world détente, for that matter falling over themselves to show dying love.
On the facade of it all looks so mostly because Africa is devoid of high profile visits as that at least even in frequency. I should not argue that the appearances of jubilant armies of folks welcoming bush were stage managed though as that was way back in the past when autocratic governments were in corridors of power, and any such functions were a mandatory assignments for all. Neither can I make an assertion that bush is still loved here because I have heard quite enough about him in the past at least, for some of our Muslim brothers it’s an insipid tablet to take, bush a state visitor?
The crux of the point for leveling such an argument is that a measurable chunk of people in these countries where bush was, I should say desperately trying out his last stunts – to try and send messages about his softer side than that we are used to.
It’s in Africa where ignorance about crucial world issues that still bedevils our capacity to analyze the bush character, the Africa we are used to, tries to be submissive and hold even our oppressors in high esteem its normal here to suffer silently or even to applaud leaders even when we are at the their wrath’s receiving end , lastly our continent is subject to much negative imagery that any episodes where positivity that comes with such events is of paramount importance to politicians, crushing a peaceful demonstration on the eve of arrival of an international figure is not an alien idea for many African statesmen.
There is an even higher stake that bush came with dollars to flush out, and having starved us of cash for a long time everybody should be seen to be thankful or we loose them. America knows how to market itself at least in the corporate world and this makes our perceptions of America a blissful Canaan where all people live in peace, there is no period we were more knowledgeable about good life in America especially through media houses than our fathers than now. I mean it’s adorable to be American even if some of our own deny it.
An American president represents that more than successful life’s image and as such attracts enviable crowds, huge adoring crowds. Its fascinating about America, I once read some papers about perceptions about America in an Egyptian research project, when posed with a question as to what country the people hated most, the first one to score high was America, an equally controversial question once again directed to the respondents in the same place as to who wanted to move to America and you know what? The score was about the same like the first. So what’s love and what’s hate or should I put it that you can have both at the same time.
